5 Signs Your Door Closer Needs Attention

A door that slams, sags, or won't close on its own is telling you something. Here are five signs your door closer needs a look.

What a door closer actually does

A door closer is the arm-and-cylinder mechanism mounted on a door or its frame that pulls the door shut automatically after it's opened, instead of leaving it to swing free or stay open. Surface-mounted closers and hydraulic closers are the two most common types - the hydraulic version specifically controls the speed of closing, so the door shuts quietly instead of slamming.

1. The door slams shut

If a door bangs shut instead of closing smoothly, the closer's speed adjustment may need attention, or the closer itself may be reaching the end of its working life. A hydraulic door closer is specifically designed to prevent this by controlling the closing speed.

2. The door doesn't close all the way

A door that stops short of the frame, leaving a gap instead of latching, is a common sign of a worn or under-strength closer, especially if the door is heavier than the closer is rated for.

3. Visible leaking or dripping from the closer body

On hydraulic closers specifically, any fluid visible on or around the closer body is a sign it's due for replacement rather than adjustment.

4. The arm is bent, loose, or the door catches on it

The mounting arm connects the closer body to the door frame. If it's bent, loose, or the door catches on it while opening or closing, the fixing hardware or the arm itself may need replacing.

5. The door swings freely with no resistance at all

If there's no resistance or automatic closing action left at all, the closer has likely failed internally and needs replacing rather than adjusting.

Matching capacity to the door

Door closers are sized to the weight and width of the door they're fitted to. A closer that's undersized for a heavy entrance door will wear out faster and may not close the door reliably, so when replacing one, it's worth confirming the door's approximate weight before choosing a replacement.
